The St. George’s college Old Boys’ Association Ontario was established in 1985 to bring together and foster fellowship and camaraderie amongst all past students and their families, who reside primarily in Ontario; and to unite us in efforts to ensure that this Jesuit institution founded in 1850 continues to provide the rounded quality education we were privileged to receive in keeping with their motto . A.M.D.G. (Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam- For The Greater Glory Of God).
How the Ball Got Rolling
In 1996 a special committee was established, chaired by our Treasurer Ray Chang; to put together a major annual fundraising event. This took the form of a Super Summer Ball Gala. The funds would go largely to assisting our alma mater St.George’s College in Kingston Jamaica and also to provide scholarships here in Canada to Old boys and their offspring to further their education in our new country.
The first Ball was held in July 1997 with Byron Lee and the Dragonaires providing the entertainment. There were over 900 in attendance including Metro Toronto Chairman Alan Tonks, Jamaica Consul General Margarietta St. Juste, and distinguished guest Bishop Lawrence Burke S.J. of the Bahamas who said grace. This is our 20th annual Ball and has become a major event on the Toronto social calendar over the Caribana week-end; providing top class entertainment and dancing for patrons and attracting visitors from across Canada, the USA and Jamaica. It fulfills a great funding need for this 164 year old Jesuit high school in a marginalized area of the capital Kingston, allowing it to continue to produce men and women for tomorrows Jamaica.
